NORUT Narvik is participating in a Interreg Nord VA project, together with institutes and companies from Northern Finland and Sweden. The goal of the project is to improve the competitiveness of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) connected to process-, mineral processing and energy industries.

Through contact with these businesses the needs and opportunities for R&D&I will be documented and new business models investigated, as for example to develop “product-service systems”. Input shall also be given to the priorities for EU industry financing programmes.

The project is a result of the combining of two project applications, which both involved contact with the process industry and the SMEs connected with it. One part of the project aims to gather input from the process industry and SMEs to an updating of the “Roadmap for Process Industry Innovation”. The previous version of this Roadmap was written in 2012 and has been used by the EU to forming of the prioritisation for several financing programmes for the process industry. It is planned to update the Roadmap to take account of more recent developments, such as the IoT (Internet of Things).

The other part of the project is to investigate the use of alternative business models, where the supplier offers not just a product, but also services or functionality connected to the product. This can lead to expanded markets and improved profitability, but it requires also account to be taken of risk-sharing and understanding for the processes that use the product.
