Railway technology in Narvik

Railway technology in Narvik

October 22, 2012

Experts in railway technology will gather in Narvik on November 21-22. The seminar marks the official opening of the Norwegian Railway Technology Centre (NorJeTS).

Norut Narvik has, in collaboration with Jernbaneverket (the Norwegian National Rail Administration) and LKAB Malmtrafik, established the Norwegian Railway Technology Centre (NorJeTS).

Track force and cold climate challenges

The centre will be Norway’s leading railway technology competence area for R & D, testing of technical solutions and competence development with the main focus on heavy haul transport.

The centre will also engage in research on railway operations in cold climate (winter operations).

NorJeTS has been established as an independent research group in Norut Narvik. The centre’s overall goal is to contribute to the development of safe and cost-effective railway transport.

International collaboration projects

NorJeTS’s main activities will be to promote and implement national and international R & D projects. Through NorJeTS it will be possible to offer equipment and specialist personnel to owners/members and other railway actors who wish to make use of the possibilities the Ofoten Line offers to implement full-scale tests as well as the collecting, systemizing and analysis of test data.

Another goal is to develop new and improved methods and models to optimize and increase the efficiency of maintenance.

ARENA Narvik – Railway technology seminar

The Ofoten Line/Ire Ore Line and Narvik Railway Station comprise, together with the city’s railway environment, a unique platform to create a national and international meeting place.

“Or, if you like, an ARENA Narvik within railway technology with special focus on ‘heavy laul’ (extreme weights) and climate-related challenges,” says Research Scientist Rune Nilsen.

NorJeTS plans to arrange several conferences of various sizes. The first ARENA Narvik conference takes place on November 21-22. Presentations on trace force and cold climate (winter operations) will be given by interesting speakers from within Norway and overseas.
